Welcome to the Maple City

Welcome to the City of Hornell – a small town environment with city conveniences.

Located in Steuben County, Hornell is within two hours of most major cities in western, central and southern New York. The nearby Finger Lakes provide many recreational and nature activities. There are two state parks and four county parks a short distance away.

Three miles north of the City is the Hornell Airport with a 5,000 foot lighted runway, capable of handling private and corporate aircraft and business jets. The airport has 15 hangars and offers jet and avgas fuel sales, aircraft charter service, flight instruction and aircraft rental.

The Hornell City School District operates two primary schools, an intermediate school and a Jr./Sr. High School. High School students enjoy a cooperative program with nearby Alfred University in which they may earn college credit in entry-level courses. There are also half-day vocational and occupational education programs at the BOCES Wildwood campus, as well as a cooperative program with Corning Community College.

St. Ann's Academy, a not-for-profit, non-public school, serves students in Pre-K through 6th grade. St. Ann’s Academy admits students of any race, color, and national or ethnic origin.

St. James Mercy Health provides both inpatient and outpatient services and a 24-hour emergency department, as well as surgical and intensive care. St. James Mercy Hospital also runs an Express Care, a Coumadin clinic, a personal emergency response system (MercyLine), mammography, digital imaging and orthopedics. Elderwood of Hornell provides respite care, subacute care, rehabilitation and long-term care for 120 residents. St. James Mercy Health is working towards full affiliation with University of Rochester Medicine.

The City of Hornell along with Lippincott’s Rubbish Removal have started a “No-Sort Recycling Program”.

You will no longer need to sort your recycling; all items can be put into one bin. This program also allows residents to recycle more items. Plastic containers, #1 - #7 will now be accepted. Also accepted are corrugated cardboard, boxboard and paper cartons, file folders and office paper (all colors), newspapers, mail and greeting cards, magazines and phone books, large rigid plastics, metal and aerosol cans and glass bottles. All containers should be rinsed clean.

Recycling will still be picked up on the third full week of the month, on your regularly scheduled trash pickup day. Your items to be recycled must be in a separate bin from your trash. Stickers to make your recycling bins are available at City Hall.

Residents are encouraged to take advantage of this service. Recycling puts more of your discarded materials back into the world and less of it into the landfill.

  • The HEDM Memorial - The mission of the Hornell Erie Depot Museum is to preserve the history and mementos of the men and women of the Hornell area, and the Hornell area railroad industry and  educate the public on the history of the people and industry which formed the backbone of the Hornell community. The Hornell Erie Depot Museum was established in 2005 by the City of Hornell to honor the men and women of the Erie Railroad.  Through generous donations from former Erie workers and their families the museum houses an interesting and varied collection of railroad memorabilia. We at the museum are now offering an opportunity for the community to honor their railroad families and friends with a commemorative plate on our Hornell Erie Depot Museum Memorial. Join now in honoring a grandfather or grandmother, uncle or aunt, father or mother, brother or sister who worked on the railroad, by honoring them on the Hornell Erie Depot Museum Railroad Memorial and support your museum today.
